Are you lost? (My personal rant on the epicness that is Lost)
So do you watch Lost? Well do you? Doyoudoyoudoyou? I just watched the last episode of season 5 AND IT IS BRILLIANT. Best show ever.
Oh you don’t really know it and think:”Hmm isn’t that silly show on that island with a complicated (AND I DO MEAN VERY COMPLICATED) storyline?”. My yes, it is.
I highly recommend it, but don’t start watching with a later season. You wouldn’t understand, it’d bore you and you would never finish this great show. The first two seasons are the weakest, a lot of backstory on the characters, the pace is a bit slow, but still really great once you get to the good chunks. After those seasons you’re emotionally invested in the characters and the pace really picks up. Season 5 for instance was an awesome emotional rollercoaster with plenty WTF moments.
If you want to catch up, here is Lost in a big nutshell (MAJOR SPOILERS):
Season 1
So, there is this plane full of people. It crashes on an island. No, no normal island. A man who couldn’t walk suddenly can, there are polar bears, a weird French lady, a big four toed statue, and an awesome killing black smoke monster (yes, you read that right). You need specific coordinates to get there or you’ll miss it. The people all have secrets and stuff, but soon become friends. Yes, this is a big mystery show. Ohyeah lots a’ people die, even your favourite ones. :(
Season 2
Then they find a hatch, blow it up and discover there are all kinds of scientific stations on the island (called the Dharma Initiative, but they all left)…woohhh scary. Oh yeah and there are other people on the island called The Others and they were in some kind of war with the Dharma club. In the hatch is a man pushing a button and if he doesn’t push the button something scary will happen. That scary thing turns out to be magnetic beam type thing and doesn’t really do that much.
Season 3
The Others lived in simple camps and looked dirty in season 1 and 2 but then it turns out they have houses and cool hip things on another island. The Others hold our heroes hostage, but they escape again. And they duke it out again, but nobody really wins. Oh yeah through the show there are flashbacks on characters but from season 3 onwards there are flashforwards, very clever mister writer guy.
Season 4
Then a boat comes to save them, but oh nooo that merrin or pippin dude from LOTR finds out they are evil. But too late, some of our heroes are on the boat. They escape again from the boat. Boat blows up. 6 Heroes make it to the world. They lie and say everybody’s dead.
Season 5
3 years later they go back, but it happens in a magic flash and suddenly they are back in 1977 on the island. They meet the other heroes again (who work for Dharma). Shit happens and then one blonde hero throws a rock at a nuclear bomb to make sure the future is changed and therefore their flight never crashed in the beginning (see season 1) and my screen went white and now I have to wait a year to see if it worked or not.
Other things:
People have certain powers: one dude never ages, a black kid can heal, a dude can see the future, 2 dudes see dead people and I think one dude will turn out to be an Egyptian God or an alien.
I’ve had about 73 WHAT THE FUCK moments so far. This show is a major brainfuck, but I’m still confident it will all make sense in about a year (when the last season airs). I could tell them, but it would be spoiler more things.
Even tough the story is…uhmmm..weird, the writing IS terrific. It does make sense within it’s own universe. The acting is great tough, some great casting choices here.
I’ve gotta stop here. There is fanboyism and plain geekyness, but 12 sentences ago I went way beyond that. I just love lost. Sleep tight.
